The Isle of Skye’s rugged coastline is mostly characterised by sheer sea cliffs and rocky shores, yet there are a handful of majestic and sometimes hidden sandy beaches to discover as well.

CLAIGAN, DUNVEGAN (NORTH WEST SKYE)
40 mins drive from Mint Croft

An easy 4km walk from the carpark in Claigan, this most unique beach on Skye is made from crushed white coral-like seaweed that makes the water look azure blue when the sun comes out.

Talisker Bay

1 hr 15 mins drive from Mint Croft

A short, easy walk through the woodland of Talisker House leads you out towards the volcanic black sand beach at Talisker Bay. Framed by impressive cliffs, stacs and waterfalls, this is certainly one of the best beaches on Skye.

GILLEN, WATERNISH (NORTH WEST SKYE)
50 mins walk from Mint Croft

Walk or drive down to the end of the road at Gillen and pick up the farm track leading down to Gillen beach. This mixed bay of sand and rocks offers stunning views towards the Ascrib islands and back towards Mint Croft. A good spot for a quick dip in the sea too, if you’re game!

One of the lesser known beaches on the Isle of Skye, this fantastic sandy beach is where James spent many childhood holidays and is particularly worth a visit at low tide. Surrounded by the Black and Red Cuillins with views over to the isles of Eigg and Rum.

10 mins drive from Mint Croft

The rocky shore by the picturesque historic fishing village of Stein is a perfect sundowner spot, with the bonus of a great pub – The Stein Inn that has some outdoor seating ideal for warmer summer evenings. Wander southward from Stein along the shoreline to Camus Lusta where you can find a steep local road leading back up to the B886 for a nice circular walk back around to Stein.

Elgol

Elgol Beach

ELGOL (SOUTH SKYE)

Elgol may seem a long way from Mint Croft but the stunning drive there is one of the best tours of Skye in itself. Once there, Elgol offers possibly the best view in Scotland, let alone on Skye, across the sea towards Loch Coruisk and the Cuillin Ridge. Wander along the stony shore and discover amazing rock formations, or take a boat tour to Loch Coruisk or one of the Small Isles.
