How to get to Skye

Whether you're planning your Isle of Skye honeymoon, a family holiday or a trip with friends, there are many ways of getting here.

We generally recommend having a car when you visit Skye as it's undoubtedly the best and easiest way to get around, and virtually essential if you're staying at Mint Croft given our remote location. Below, we have outlined the various options and routes you can take.

Travel Directions

Travel by car

Mint Croft is about one and a half hours drive from the Skye Bridge. The journey to Mint Croft from Edinburgh or Glasgow is about six hours, Aberdeen is approximately five hours. From Inverness the journey time is about three and a half hours.

Directions from the Skye Bridge

Take the A87 to Broadford and then onto Portree. At Portree follow the A87 towards Uig, after approximately 3 miles turn left on to the A850 towards Dunvegan. Follow the A850 for 18 miles and then turn right onto the B886 Waternish (Geary) road. Continue straight for 4 miles. At the T-junction turn right, go up the hill and continue on past Skyeskyns until you come to a sign for Geary. At the sign for Geary take a right, drive past the school on the left, over the cattle grid and almost to the end of the road. Mint Croft is on the left hand side of the road like most of the houses in Geary.

Directions from Armadale, the Mallaig ferry terminal at Sleat

At Armadale take the A851 to Broadford, after 16 miles turn left on to the A87 and continue through Broadford to Portree. At Portree follow the A87 towards Uig, after approximately 3 miles turn left on to the A850 towards Dunvegan. Follow the A850 for 18 miles and then turn right onto the B886 Waternish (Geary) road. Continue straight for 4 miles, at the T-junction turn right, go up the hill and continue on past Skyeskyns until you come to a sign for Geary. At the sign for Geary take a right, drive past the school on the left, over the cattle grid and almost to the end of the road. Mint Croft is on the left hand side of the road like most of the houses in Geary.

A notice to Sat Nav users

The most direct route to the island is across the Skye bridge. Some Sat Nav systems may tell you that the most direct route is via the Mallaig to Armadale ferry crossing. If you do wish to travel to Skye by ferry please check the timetable; reservations are highly recommended.

Directions from the Uig Ferry Terminal

Take the A87 towards Portree and after 11 miles turn right onto the B850 towards Dunvegan. Follow the A850 for 18 miles and then turn right onto the B886 Waternish (Geary) road. Continue straight for 4 miles, at the T-junction turn right, go up the hill and continue on past Skyeskyns until you come to a sign for Geary. At the sign for Geary take a right, drive past the school on the left, over the cattle grid and almost to the end of the road. Car Hire

Car hire is available from Morrison Car Hire in Portree. They can also arrange for your hire car to be available at various locations around Skye and Lochalsh, including the train station at Kyle of Lochalsh, the ferry terminals at Armadale and Uig, or in Broadford or Dunvegan. Train

You can travel from all major stations in the UK to Inverness and Fort William. From Inverness you can catch a train to Kyle of Lochalsh and then a bus to Portree on Skye. From Fort William you can catch a train to Mallaig and a ferry crossing to Armadale on Skye.

Bus

There are daily bus services from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Portree on Skye. The journey time is approximately seven hours. The bus from Portree to the nearest bus stop, Fairy Bridge, is infrequent. The bus stop is nine miles from Mint Croft.
